Homeland Security and Gardeners

Just another weird and wacky plant found growing in New Orleans- the Castor Bean Plant.
But beware: in addition to it’s being the central component in the manufacture of Castor oil (yuk!) the seeds also contain ricin (admittedly a very bad thing). Homeland security (or whoever) has banned it’s being sold. So, because of this you can’t purchase a plant at any nursery. Anywhere.
If you want to grow the very pretty purple lobed-leaved practically tree height plant with really cool dark red fuzzy flower shafts that drop really long black seed pods that look like they’re from outer space…. you’ll have to dig one up.

I can dig it.
