One of the most lovely architectural features of A Pleasant House is all of it’s fireplaces.
We have three (inside).
They were never designed to burn wood ( all are 19th century coal burning boxes- narrow, shallow, with coffered walls, and long- long stacks that had to stretch 40 feet to clear the roof line).
Each still has the original cast iron coal basket and each has a different surround and mantel.
We’ve had them sealed, and fireproofed (to code), and have installed ventless gas coal baskets, because, after all, I’m not going to burn coal.
I want ambience, and a small bit of supplemental heat, and maybe a jolly old elf to have choices so that he doesn’t fly by and miss the cookies…
