A Bloggers Journey- Lesson 1

Well, it was one year ago to the day that I decided to start a blog.
I’d been reading an issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine where they featured an assortment of gardening blogs and I thought, “I could do this! I should do this!”
After all, I’m a ‘Legend In My Own Mind’, sassy, intelligent, talented, sassy, maybe- delusional.
     And so I dived in.
That says it all, ‘dived in’.
Classic Cheryl. Work out the kinks as you go along- don’t take no for an answer- pretend your a pro- of course I can- kinda classic move.
Surfed the net. Found a blog template/hosting site. Filled in the blanks. Snapped a pic of my flowers. Typed in a few sentences. And waited to be LOVED… and waited….to beloved.
     Not so fast girlie.
You’ve got a bit more to learn.

This week I’ll opine, whine, and try to throw someone a lifeline (so lame- sorry), using my steep learning curve that was (and is) the journey of a BLOGGER.

Lesson One:
Read blogs
     This step might seem obvious.
You might say you’d have to be an idiot to not know what a blog is, or what’s in them, or who’s writing what, and yet…(I’m fiddling my fingers) I digress…
All I knew was that it seemed like if you had an interest and had a camera and could type and had some time and was always cracking yourself-up, you could do this. In fact, you SHOULD do this because someone else will think you’re funny too and be dazzled by your acerbic wit and your brilliant insights that might possibly solve an international security crisis and someday your grandchildren would be able to icloud their grandmother, in her prime, without the accompaniment of drool and soft foods.
My God!- that’s motivation, don’t you think?
OK, motivation has never been a problem for me, but this lesson isn’t about mo-to-va-tion, is it? No, it’s about understanding what’s happening out there- in the Blogverse (like: joining a gardening club that meets in a boarded-up abandoned warehouse with 16 generators running in the parking lot- kind of u-n-d-e-r-s-t-a-n-d-i-n-g).
     So I dived-in.
Blinders on, and then, played catch-up.
Advise:
Read blogs
Find a few that speak to you. Study their style, and content, and frequency.
Repeat…Repeat…Repeat…

until the crazy voice in your head
starts to put pen to paper and you know how to copy and paste in your sleep.

IN YOUR SLEEP

  • Ed - Congrats on your first year! I agree with you that becoming a good blogger requires you to read blogs…it also requires you to get involved with other blogs and comment! I think I enjoy that the most, that and all the very positive people out there!ReplyCancel

  • Diana Chastain - Seriously, blogging is a job whether you are paid or not. Is it fun? Yes, I love blogging that’s why I did for FREE for years, but you want someone to read what you write so feel like you aren’t just sending mindless rambles out into open space. Congrats on your first year. I have been blogging around different spaces since 2003. If you ever need to ask a question, I can lend an ear. Maybe not advice but I sure will try. 🙂

    • Cheryl Nicholl - Jesus- what ‘ADVISE’ don’t I need? As for the wanting to have someone READ what you write- thank you.ReplyCancel

  • Sue - I have been blogging now just over a year now too. Once I get an idea I haul off and just do it without knowing what I am getting into. My saying is “with blogging you never know what is going to happen next.” The adventure continues. Congratulations and Happy First Year.ReplyCancel

  • Cheryl Nicholl - Thanks Sue. you too!ReplyCancel

  • D. Marie Michael - Blogging is a lovely pain in the butt but I still do it. I have several active blogs – that’s all I do now that I am unemployed. I blog. I even blog in my sleep.
I’ve been blogging since it started but only obsessively for over a year. I’ve started a new blog (am I nuts?) and having fun with yet another one. Nice to meet you.ReplyCancel

  • Cheryl Nicholl - Well hello there! Nice to meet you too! Last night I rearranged a room AND this website- in my sleep. Uughhh! I’m going to check out your blogs. Hope to see you back here again. Have a great day!ReplyCancel
