I understand.


You where in Edinburgh, Bob, and had dinner at a pub.


The city can sweep you off your feet.


It did me and my daughter.




Right off to see how the swells, and their staff, lived in a National Trust for Scotland home aptly named The Georgian House off Charlotte Square in New Town.


Originally the entire section of land was owned by the Earl of Moray, who, in financial troubles (Of course. How else do these things happen?) sold the lot to the burgeoning city in 1791, at which point the Edinburgh Town Council stepped in and took it off his hands hiring the venerable architect Robert Adam to design a row of grand houses.


Adams’ was paid 200 guineas for the design and an additional 5 guineas for each individual house plan, a total of eleven abodes across a ‘Palace’ front designed with ‘uncommon finesse and grandeur’- because, ADAM.


First owner, John Lamont, paid £1,800 ($2340) and shortly after, in 1796, sold for £3,000 ($4,000).

A succession of four owners, leading to the contemporary purchase by the The National Trust for Scotland in 1975, saw one widow, three wives & three husbands, over 21 children, 32 servants, one upholstery business and another cabinet maker, at one time or another, occupying the space.




That’s a lot of soup.


We had to see how they served it.


SO off we went meandering through leafy green squares, marching northward as the homes increased in size and the harsh sounds of commerce decreased.


All was quiet- except for the birds and the occasional purr of a Mercedes downshifting.


Lovely… and the house was grand as well, with five stories of pediments and pillars and a guardian sphinx on the roof- because if you want a guardian on your roof why not make it a sphinx- am I right?

“Why, yes they did!”


“And a locked silver cabinet? A Store room? “




“A servant’s room? A place where they all ate together?”


“Again, yes. You seem more interested in that side of business.”


“I am…

…They make the soup.”



And make the beds. And do the dustin’ and a cleanin’. That’s what.
